The How To Setup Your Tattoo Machine textbook was written by multi-disciplined artist Joshua Andrews, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, over three years, from 2001 to 2004. He wrote the textbook simultaneously while he was writing his much larger and more informative apprentice tattoo artist textbook: The Art of Tattooing. The Art of Tattooing was getting to too large and too costly to print and some chapters were clearly worthy of their own books, so breaking The Art of Tattooing into separate books made sense.

Joshua came to writing his books when he was invited to be an apprentice tattoo artist in the late Nineteen-Nineties to early Two-Thousands. He recognized that all of his tattooing teachers spent a large amount of time schooling him and all of their apprentices in many topics and matters that could be mastered by the apprentices on their own time, if there was just an apprentice artist's textbook for them to take home, thus saving the tattoo artist's time and effort.

The only book available at the time was Huck Spaulding's A-Z of Tattooing and it was expensive and not easily available outside of the United States of America at that time.
